Periodic Table of Elements

A group of both international and American printmakers set out to create each of the 118 elements in the periodic table, that lovable chart they all made us memorize in chemistry class.

"Ninety-six printmakers of all experience levels, have joined together to produce 118 prints in any medium; woodcut, linocut, monotype, etching, lithograph, silkscreen, or any combination. The end result is a periodic table of elements intended to promote both science and the arts."

Pretty impressive project, if you ask me. Especially since I have always been partial to the sciences. These are a few of my favorites:

You can see the rest of them here.

PID Challenge: Heroes+Villains

The first PID challenge of 2008 has officially spun from the beautiful tribute to Stan Lee that I posted previously. Now, I challenge everyone involved in the blog to pay tribute to their favorite heroes and villians. It's not isolated to a particular franchise, so let any inspiration drive you. Be creative!!

I'd love if we can follow through with these within the week. They don't have to be anything too crazy depending on your time limits, but put together your best, most creative, and well thought out tribute art.

Happy Creating!!!

Stan Lee Tribute

Shal forwarded me this fantastic link and suggested I make a post of it. If you click THIS LINK you'll be in for a surprise. It's a blog that has organized a tribute to Stan Lee and his many glorious creations. A bunch of artists created their own takes, and i've pulled some standouts and posted them below. It's certainly worth a look!

Sketch-o-rama

Man. Busy last couple of days. I moved (and not totally unpacked), had some serious freelance work to do, and had to wait a few days to get my internet rolling again. But, I still managed to keep drawing on my sketchbook. Tomorrow Shal and I are heading to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, so I hope to post those future sketches sooner than a rabbit teaches a potato how to tap dance. Word.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Nick Dewar

I found Nick Dewar's website browsing the Drawn blog a week or so ago. His style is simple, yet his images are strong and the colors he chooses for each illustration makes the images punch you in the face and get you to pay attention. I also enjoy the fact that he has a section in his website where he gives you a step by step process to how he comes up with a finished illustration. I am always intrigued by how artists approach their work and get their end result. And this satisfies me to no end. Here are some of my favorite illustrations from his on-line portfolio:

As for me, I was in the middle of a move this past weekend. Now that I am 30% settled in (most everything is still in boxes and it's hard to live that way), I will try to catch up with my posting responsibilities. Weeee!

Artist Spotlight: Ryan Sook

Ryan Sook is an American comic book artist from San Jose, California. He has worked on B.P.R.D. (a spin-off of Hellboy), Arkham Asylym: Living Hell, The Spectre, Hawkman, Seven Soldiers: Zatanna, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. He also illustrated X-Factor, written by Peter David at Marvel Comics. His style bears a strong resemblance to Mike Mignola and Adam Hughes.

I came across his artwork back in 2002 when he first pencilled an issue of the first run of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' comic books. He later went on to do one more story, and afterwards I did not come across his work until he pencilled and covered the re-launch of Peter David's 'X-Factor'. His style improved and grew immensely by this point and I found that his dark, noir-ish style fit the book beautifully. You can tell from the X-Factor Cover I places below that his style is very detailed and beautifully shadowed.

This wraps Laz's "Comic-Book-o-Obsess-o" Segment of PID. :)
